Second House on the Base of a Slope

The house is located on the base of the slope in Arakawa, Ishigaki-shi, where you can see Sakishima islands and Taketomi Island on the horizon right below your eyes, is a second house for a doctor and his wife and TOMO who live around Tokyo for visiting a few times a month.

What was required was the image of a house where family is extraordinary and bright and open house with natural light, wind, and scenery as if you can run away from the bustle of the city and hard work. While maintaining the original shape of this house, the living space that is open in “nature” is placed on a podium as a concrete chunk that is close to a square in shape. The living and dining room and kitchen is placed by the ocean, the kitchen has a role as a divider, and master bedroom, 2 individual rooms, and sanitary space are placed on the other side of the living room shelf on the mountain side.

The public space (LDK) and private rooms (individual rooms and wet area) are divided by 13m long shelf that is placed on the core of the building. Kitchen and living room storage is on the LDK side and bookshelf and artwork on the gallery hall side. And the dividing shelf has opening of 400mm from the 2,700mm high ceiling so the ocean breeze can run from the living room to each individual room.

As the client hoped, the living and dining room has breeze through the terrace from cobalt blue ocean below the eye, and you can see white waves all over the wide ocean and blue clear sky with jet cloud along the jet stream appearing and disappearing while you are inside. As the dusk approaches, starry sky starts to shine. Here, you can spend each moment filled with all creation which you cannot experience in the city.

We hope that family can spend weekend and small holidays interacting with nature and people on Ishigaki Island, heal their body and soul, and spend happy relaxing life just like the time has stopped on this island.

Second Home in the Woods

Located in the northeast of Ibaruma area. Across the Route 79, the house commands the view of the gulf of Ibaruma in the East China Sea. This 200 square meters property stands on a mountain slope.

Clients of the vacation house are a couple of a German husband and a Japanese wife both live in Tokyo. The couple has visited Okinawa on their vacations. Especially the beautiful wild nature and the coral sea of Ishigaki islands caught the couple’s heart. Convinced, the beauty of the islands was meant for their dream vacation house, the couple has purchased the property with ocean view, and the project has begun.

We hopped on a plane as soon as we received the offer. Land investigation was conducted to start off. Then we proceeded with designing based on our clients’ needs. We all agreed upon conserving the nature as much as possible, a good-old cottage in the woods.

Stepping into the living room, dining room, and master bedroom, you will oversee the gulf and see the sunset in the evening. We carefully located a bathtub so not only from the rooms but also you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery while relaxing in the tub. The roof is learnt toward the woods, higher on the ocean side. The façade is designed at the maximum size. Leaning towards the ocean, the large façade and the roof hold the house together in a stylish rectangular shape. Over the deck, from the living/dining room looking, the rectangular concrete frames the outside woods like an artful masterpiece.

This project was carried out upon a nature friendly spirit to conserve the green and to live together in harmony. During March to April, you might be able to see dancing Yaeyama fireflies’ soft and dreamy lights glowing in the pitch-black night.

Cherry Blossom House in Shuri

Shuri, Naha city, Okinawa once flourished as Imperial City of the Ryukyu Kingdom. People have chosen the land, built houses, and lived. Countless typhoons have stormed off. Numerous memories have been made through all ups and downs. As the people age, the houses as well got older. Those old houses in this area has been now replaced with mid-to-high-rise apartment buildings. Histories of various architectural designs have come together in this area. The house owner as well had decided to renovate the house. Generations of memories will be continuously passed down on this historic land of Shuri.

Old houses built around the War time and new modern architectures are all mingled in one place. The owner’s request was to reconstruct the two old houses out together in one house. A house that inherits all the memories and feels comfortable and homey, and at the same time ready to start a fresh new chapter.

As we plan the structure of the new house, we have considered that the busy road facing the property should be distanced from the house. Further coverage has done by placing a wall “hinpun” (This is one of the traditional Ryukyu architectural designs, derived from the Chinese screen “Pinpun”. The roles of the stone wall are for privacy and to ward off evil spirits.) made of cedar wood boards. Room placements are in order of; Entrance/Japanese-style room → living room/ dining/ kitchen etc. → bedroom/ bathroom. Living room, dining room and kitchen is placed on the center of the house and the entire property for convenient access.

For exterior landscape, large external space is finely balanced with a "Basin", "Green Garden", "Tile Floored Patio", "Laundry Yard", "Large Garden of Cherry Blossom Trees". The placements are carefully coordinated to take in natural light and breeze from outside and to provide beautiful sceneries for each room.

Brand new house on the same old land. Newly planted cherry blossom trees. The beginning of a new chapter is just about to start.

The house on the Hirara Marina Side

This is a vacation home on Miyako Island that has rich nature. The plot is located on a flat land in Miyakojima city where houses are scattered. My client was attracted by the island and has been visiting this island time to time for a few years like he was running away from the bustles of the big city. He made friends with a diving fisherman during his stay on the island, and he showed him the land and he decided to build a vacation home.

It has a coarse expression with the interior and exterior that is undressed concrete with white paint and some havs sideway cedar board pattern finish. It has a construction plan with courtyard on the south so people cannot see the inside of the building from the road.

Visitors walk from the road on the south along the sideway cedar board pattern concrete finish himpun wall and are lead to entrance and inside the building while feeling the nature in the front yard and courtyard. L-shaped building is divided into 2 zones with the core of dining room and kitchen. The western zone has master bedroom/sanitary space as well as three bedrooms for guests, and the eastern zone has living room/Japanese room as well as public space.

The building is arranged in L-shape surrounding the courtyard in the center. From every room, you can see a sugarcane field beyond the courtyard, cloud running through the blue sky, hear the sound of wind, and see the dancing shadow and light from the sun reflected on the white wall. This special structure let you enjoy various aspects and let you feel the signs of nature all the time.

The theme of this project is the space where people who are attracted to this island can get away from the bustle of the city and relax their body and soul by spending quiet time. And we consider that it was a proposal for the place where my client, who is an executive of a company that expands business throughout Japan, can give his warmest welcome his family and co-workers who will visit time to time in the future as well as friends he met on the island and tell them with a confidence that “you are always welcome to stay any time. I have rooms ready for you”

Connected.flow

The project begun with a spontaneous intuition that is somewhat poetic; “life guided by a flow of water”. This house is built upon this concept. Taking in natural lights from outside, living with the nature effortlessly. Pursue of simplicity and quality. Putting aside loud designs, we thought about the people and focused on the best architectural design to help live simply.

The house is located along an intersection in Uruma city. Area readjustment has been carried out for a few decades in the area. Requests from the client couple were quite simple as such; “Flat roofed house. Privacy and security are well protected. Dog-friendly.”

First we started off with conducting a land investigation and to understand the landscape surrounding the property. Most neighborhood buildings are two story’s high. Two sides of the property are facing the road. We concluded that the best solution is to build a fence around the house like a fortress and secure a large open space inside of the fence.

The staircase on the east entrance leads up to the front porch, and to the door step. Open the front door, the pleasant sound of waterfall welcomes you. Skylight is lined from the door to the lights to guide you in the dark.

LDK is arranged in the center of the device, “connected. flow”, serves as building core. On the right side, there is a Japanese-style room across “Water Garden” with a basin pouring out water. On the left side, there is “Green Garden” neatly paved with green grass across the master bedroom, walk-in closet, and bathroom. LDK placed on the center of the building increases the flow of access and creates a relaxed atmosphere free of boundaries that separate inside and outside. This will as well result in increasing more opportunities to gather and enjoy conversations. The two gardens take in breeze from outside and provide shade.

Strong rays of Okinawan sunlight pour onto the roof and cast artful shadows on the floor and on the white wall. When the sun goes down, moon light from the ceiling creates a dreamy effect.

All-in-white interior. As a result of pursuing simplicity, we eliminated redundant ornaments realistically possible such as door frames and window frames and succeeded in increasing the quality. The simple and functional arrangement has realized the timeless design.

The building corresponds naturally with the tropical climate of Okinawa. The building breathes in the wind and takes in the lights, becomes a shelter on a rainy day. Sun rays reflected on the white wall create an art of shadows. Some parts such as the sound of waterfall and construction cannot be made all naturally. I would like to say that “Connected. flow” has perfected the balance of pure “nature” and “architecture”.

House with Separate Cottage

Built at a little apart from main street and downtown of Uruma City, this is a house for two generation: the mother, son and his wife.

Around the site, houses located at the space dotted with a chrysanthemum field and forests. Such a typical scenery in the suburb. Two buildings including the main building where the clients are living, and “cottage” separate from the main building are located on the site which is over about 1320 ㎡ (400 tsubo). Utilizing the slope land, the L-shaped main building is arranged surround the garden, one the other hand, the cottage distant from the main building is designed in a sense of distance.

With a garden in the eastern side and terrace in the west side, the main building is where the living room, dining room and kitchen are located. In the right wing of the building are the main bedroom, sanitary space and study, and the entrance hall, the mother’s bedroom and another sanitary space is in the left wing.

In the cottage, there is an altar for worshipping God in “Ichibanza” and a family Buddhist altar in “Nibanza.” (Ichibanza and Nibanza mean the place for the altars in Okinawan dialect.) The Uraza (Resting room for visit) built as a simple cabin, is set with a kitchen, a rest room and a storage room. The eaves of both of the two buildings are low and deep that the strong sunlight of summer would be blocked. Moreover, to keep the house cool, the doors and windows are designed for a good ventilation.

Nursing Home for the Elderly / Sukoyaka

This facility is located on Irabu Island, which takes 30 minutes in ferry from the main island of Miyako Island among Sakishima Islands. It is on the shoreline with a scent of ocean near Sawadanohama beach, which is designated as top 100 waterside views in Japan.

The client is a female president of a company, which is the only one that specialize nursing home for the elderly in Irabu Island. The wave of the aging population and lower birthrate is a serious problem in this small island, and the balance between people who needs care and people who provide the care is tipping over. The old tradition of children and grandchildren taking care of the parents and seeing them through the end is starting to disappear. Especially since it is an isolated island, the current situation is that young people leave the island looking for a job and elderly people are left behind. In such situation this plan aimed to build a nursing home where elderly people can live with a peace in mind in this island.

Lot area is 1160㎡. One story building with 300㎡ floor space is arranged with function training room and dining hall, which is the core of the facility, and resting room surrounding the courtyard located on the east side. On the south and west side where the entrance hall is located has corridor, precast concrete armor unit is twisted in L shape and 60×120@200 wooden louver is on the top. It blocks the eastern sun and louver has flowers from southern country such as bougainvillea blooming all over the place providing gentle shade on the facility.

In the facility, the function training room and dining hall is located in the front from the south side entrance and the office and break room on the west side. Resting room is located by the courtyard on the east side and wet area and the kitchen is on the road side. The function training room and dining hall where everyone gather has high ceiling that is little over 4m, and it is an open space where dust outlet and clerestory window provide natural light all day long. Also, each resting room is a little less than 10㎡ so it is not big, but is a comfortable room where gentle light surround the whole room. The interior is finished with natural wood floor and walls and ceiling is unified with calm and gentle color. Curtains and furniture are also unified with warm colors.

In this plan, we had the theme of “nagomi (calmness)” which is part of the company name, and we aimed to have design with compassion that would create “bonds” like a family and connect people.

Box/office

The house is located on a side of a busy intersection in Uruma city. Area readjustment has been carried out for a few decades in the area. This long and narrow property has a frontage of 8m and a depth of 21m. The office consists of three concrete boxes which are measured to have the maximum possible size utilizing the unique shape of the property.

The client of the “Box / office” is a design studio with 10 employees. On the first floor, there are a lot and a staircase which leads up to a concrete wall terrace on the second floor. The second floor and the third floor are especially reserved for office rooms. a terrace that was wide open to the sky at the core of two studios, there is a meeting / sanitary spaces, etc.. Placing the concrete-wall open-roof terrace on the center of the building, two studios, meeting room and bathroom surround the terrace.

The compact simplicity of the building is even more obvious in comparison with the surrounding residential. The stark and bear concrete panel and cedar boards panel used for wall and ceiling bring the entire facilities together in the urban industrial design. We have pursued cost-effective and resource-friendly designs in this architecture while improving the quality of the simplified structure.

The open-roof terrace on the center of the building naturally lights up the rooms while the concrete walls give solid privacy. Two types of concrete walls and ceiling, and the light and shadow that fall on the color-concrete coated black floor create give modern and professional tastes to the building.

I’d like to conclude that this project was essentially to create a structure where the designing naturally promotes productivity and creativity of the workers in the environment balanced with both urban simplicity and nature.

Okinawa Chouju-en Nursing Home

As for the elderly person who always needed care, home health care had a limit, and care facilities have been common until now.
However, the desire to expect the life at the home throughout the life is extremely a matter of course as a person. Therefore, in late years, many small scale functional types of home care to have been institutionalized newly. It is also called "At-home facilities". This is because the service is offered from the care facilities, while the place of caring having turned into a home or an apartment.

In response to a variety of needs of nursing care users, especially who are going to day care facilities, support of their home care by home helper visiting or short stay in facility is necessary. We designed for the base of support service, which is one of new-built facilities in Okinawa.

▶Concept: A space where changing of light or sense of nature can be felt, filled with sences of nature, secenery and relaxing time which were forgotten in everyday life. We wish that the elder users of the facilitiy can live independently and staffs here can become the leader of this aging society, working with pride.

▶Point of Site Planning and Floor Planning: The site is located from prefectural road in the back, and it is a place with a rich terrain of a height difference change. Enter from the east entrance, follow the promenade surrounded by greenery and flowers and approach to the main lobby.

The building is basically bulit as an one-story house, not in a retaining wall style but a configuration that incorporates pilotis that took advantage from the height difference of the site. Entrance hall, Living room and restaurant are in the circular part of the building, and the private spaces such as private room, bath room and restroom, are in the rectengular part with a passageway.

While reducing as much as possible to destroy the natural forests spread around, as if the building was here in nature from long long ago.

▶Open Space and Stage: Open space is a communication space for user and their family, and the half-round stage below it is a multipripose space used in events. The slope to stage becomes a walk course for rehabilitation, and benches was installed next to it. When there is event on stage, the whole slope can be changed in bleachers.

EM Hotel Costa Vista Okinawa・EM Spa Corazon Okinawa

This project is a renovation of a hotel that was built when Okinawa was under the rule of the United States.

It was constructed 30 years ago by Hilton Hotel, which symbolizes the flamboyance of the United States. After that, it changed from the Hilton Hotel to the Sheraton Hotel. And by riding the wave of the era, it changed from the Sheraton Hotel to the Star Hill, which is a Japanese company. For 15 years, it has been a ruin but this plan will “recreate” the building while sufficiently understanding the cultural value. The existing building was reborn as a recreation center with wellness function with EM (effective microorganism) technology, EM center function, and logging facility.

With the basic theme of “a place for new interaction with people and facility where creativity and health is nurtured” in the 21st century, we hope that the hotel with EM technology will bring more activities in the surrounding area and the “scenery” of prosperity from a long time ago is recreated again.

CASA VIENTO

▶Introduction and Location: The building was built on the hill of Chatan Town located in the central part of Okinawa. It is the office of a design company of 20 staff scales. The building has a parking lot / entrance hall on the first floor, studio / meeting room / reception room on the second and third floor, and five rooms for young staffs' accommodation on the fourth floor.

▶Concept of the Architectural Plan: Frontage 10m depth but 35m the lean, the site is narrow. The building is like two concrete boxes in the same form divided into three parts, stuck in the box while the concrete covered with a film of glass, and the glass box is floating in the air. The center part has a terrace and pool drawing nature atmosphere into the room. As a space which was seperated by the sky, it has become the peaceful "place" to take a rest.

▶Zoning: It is a zoning plan that to seperate the building into two parts, studio area which has 3 rooms for the designers and meeting area for meeting room and reception room. The terrace and pool between the two parts is the dividing line.

▶Terrace/Swimming Pool: Located between two parts of the studio, the terrace and swimming pool connect the two parts and let the light in that will cause convection. Moreover, the water of the pool is circulated, sending the sound of water through the building. It cools down hot air in summer and makes a comfortable space.

▶Frontage: The building is located at a place where the scene of the most energetic and flourishing street of Okinawa: Mihama, Chatan Town, can be overlooked.

▶Energy and Ecology: First, due to glass was used as a building material, from an Eco-like point of view and for the purpose to reduce air condition costs, solar thermal energy is used and 20% of the mounthly fuel and light expenses is saved.

The secondary task is the use of photocatalyst, a dreamlike technology to remove smoke or to kill bacterias of toilet tiles. It's a proud technology from Japan and it may have been known due to recent mass media report. Photocatalytic materials are used on the concrete part of the outer wall, anti-dirty process of glass material, free-maintainance materials and sanitary space. We still keep finding out more possibilities and usage of photocatalytic materials in architecture.

The third thing is to make the best use of EM technology, which was originally eveloped as an alternative technology of a farm and the artificial manure. But after its function of restrainting a strong bad smell was unreaveled, it came to be used for recycling of stock raising and the garbage. After using EM the quality of the water and the soil became clear, so it came to be used for wastewater treatment and the purification of polluted river and wetlands. use of EM(effective microorganisms) on the progress of work, materials such as concrete, rainwater tank established underground and purifying the water of swimming pool. From this point of view, we started to think that whether it can be a king of technique which can be used in construction. We are looking forward to its effect of reducing smell released from chemical substances such as thinner or ethylene, improving neutralization of steel concrete, maintaining the situation of metal such as reinforcing rods to be hard to be oxidized, and postponing the life of the structure.

▶Concept of the Office: We believe that the ideal office is where all the staff can exert their creavitivity and feel proud of their work. Designers not only "design" the buildings but also care about issues about nature and ecology, welfare services for the elderly and to perceive the transfiguration of society. To lead the society by architecture is a dream of the organizarion, and the designers here try to propose apporpriately for the society.
